Textile Re-Treats

Treat yourself to a holiday in sunny Eastbourne and take one of our 3-5 day courses. Courses are organised on the page chronologically.

Scroll down to find courses with exceptional artists and teachers:
This year’s courses are full but 2020 sees the return of Debbie Lyddon in July, and 2004 V&A Artist in Residence Sue Lawty teaching tapestry in April. I am already planning more for 2021, including Sam Jones teaching Eco Printing a very popular option.

Like us on FaceBook to get immediate notification of new Re-Treats as they go live. Facebook link: Studio11 Eastbourne or contact Christine via the Contact Page and join the mailing list.

These courses will be fun but intense learning experiences and you will leave with plenty of practical knowledge to take into your own textile work. The classes are limited to 8 students, and you will work with a bench buddy on the 2m benches. There is a buffet style lunch – highly recommended by students from previous Re-Treats! And if you are still not sure – read some of the feedback in the comments section at the bottom of the Home page

SUE LAWTY

TACTILE SENSIBILITY IN WOVEN TAPESTRY
responses to a richly nuanced coastal environment

11 – 15 JUNE 2021        £525 + materials

1 SPACE HAS BECOME AVAILABLE ON THIS RE-SCHEDULED COURSE

Sea, sand, geology, rock, light, movement, mark, shape, pattern, colour, rhythm, tone, texture, time…. this five day workshop allows space to respond to the stimulus of the richly nuanced coastal environment. During explorations along local beaches participants will collect ideas through visual and written notes and photographs to inform thinking and design.
Back in the studio a beautifully curated selection of materials including natural handspun hemps, raphia, papers, linens and luscious silks, will be available for the weaving of carefully considered samples and small pieces to push ideas forward. Quiet tuition and guidance will help students experiment and investigate structure, colour, materiality and composition, and thus develop a heightened sensitivity to subtle textural nuances and concepts. Participants will leave with purpose and motivation to pursue their own individual enquiry. Teaching is individual, personal and relaxed.

ACCOMMODATION

There are a couple of small B&B’s about 10 minutes away from the studio along the seafront.  Breakers and By The Sea are used by studio regulars and are reasonable and have great breakfasts! There is also a dog friendly B&B just a little further from the studio – Ebor Lodge

We now have a Premier Inn in the centre of Eastbourne about 5-10 minutes walk away .

Several students have stayed in Ravilious Hotel and thoroughly recommended it for its breakfasts, and its cleanliness. It is also only about 10-15 mins walk from the station but now it is about 25 mins from the studio. It does have quite a few stairs, so perhaps not suitable for anyone with knee problems. Another B&B close to the station but about 20-25 mins from studio venue, is The Manse, a stylish house with many arts & crafts original features and great breakfasts!

As this is a holiday town, there are also a wide range of hotels and B&B’s to suit every purse! Watch this space for more recommendations!

  1. I’ve just been on the Caroline Bartlett course and loved every minute of it. It was very well structured and thought out, full of fascinating information and little gems of helpful tips. She is a lovely tutor, warm and passionate about her work.
There was plenty of time for practical work though I personally am a slow worker….food for thought will be continued in my studio!
Studio 11 itself is a great place, so close to the station, which was excellent as I commuted every day, and very well equipped.
Christine provided delicious lunches, which were a real treat and it was lovely to have a small intimate class.
If you need a welcoming creative retreat and some “Me time”, this place is well worth a visit….!
Christine- had you thought of having Cas Holmes?
